Resources for Life Events: CRVIS Volunteer Opportunities, 1999
Cornell Retirees Volunteering in Service (CRVIS) is recruiting volunteers to work in four different schools in Tompkins County during the next school year. Current volunteers have found this to be a rewarding experience by giving individual attention to children on special projects, enabling the classroom to have smaller reading groups, assisting the children in completing homework assignments and helping in the library, gym and other areas.
CRVIS was born in 1995 when a group of 10 Cornell retirees started meeting to discuss ways that Cornell retirees and their spouses could add value to their communities. After exploring a number of opportunities they decided to focus in the public school system on students between 5 and 12. The pilot project in the Cayuga Heights elementary school in 1996 proved to be a great success for volunteers, students and the school.
This next school year volunteers are being recruited to work in the Cayuga Heights, Enfield, Freeville and the Trumansburg elementary schools. Volunteer roles are flexible with time commitments and assignments based on need and the interest of the volunteers. Orientation meetings are conducted in each school in September.
If you would like more information or would like to volunteer, contact Janet Beebe, 255-7565, 130 Day Hall, Cornell. A CRVIS board member will be happy to call you to discuss exciting volunteer opportunities.
