Personal Accident Insurance: General Information

This insurance is available to eligible faculty and staff  to help provide for your family’s financial security in the event of a loss by accidental means.

Eligibility is defined as:
1. A regular full-time or part-time employee of Cornell University and County Extension Services, who is appointed to work a minimum of 20 hours per week over a period of at least 6 months, is eligible immediately.

2. A member of the faculty or exempt staff of Cornell University who is appointed for 50% or more for at least one semester, with Cornell salary, not to include AD White Professors at Large, is eligible immediately.

3. All eligible spouses/same-sex partners of eligible faculty and staff.

4. All eligible dependent child(ren) of eligible faculty and staff.

Coverage amounts:
Coverage for eligible faculty and staff can be elected in $10,000 increments from $10,000 up to $250,000.

The Plan also allows for employee coverage amounts in $10,000 increments between $250,000 and $500,000, but an election in this range cannot exceed ten times annual budgeted salary.

Spouse/same-sex partners may elect 100% or 50% of the faculty/staff election to a maximum of $250,000.

Dependent child(ren) may be covered by an amount equal to 10% of the selected faculty or staff amount to a maximum of $25,000. Coverage is available for children up to the age of 19 years. Children can be covered through the age of 24 if they are a full time college student. It is the employee's responsibility to notify CIGNA Group Insurance when their child is no longer eligible for the benefit.

The monthly rate per $1,000 of coverage is $.021 for employee, $.022 for spouse/domestic partner and $.044 for children.
