Introduction

Welcome to Cornell

As vice president for human resources, I would like to welcome all those who have recently accepted a position at Cornell. The staff members in the Office of Human Resources and I are very interested in ensuring that your transition to Cornell’s work environment is a smooth and rewarding one.

For those who are not new to Cornell, I am very pleased to be able to offer to you the Staff Handbook, with hopes that it will enable you to become reacquainted with all that Cornell University has to offer.

Regardless of whether you are a new staff member or are a staff member with many years of dedicated service, I would encourage you to take the time to familiarize yourself with this handbook and its contents.

In it we have included some of the key documents that describe the kind of working and teaching environment that Cornell promotes, such as Cornell’s statement on diversity and inclusiveness, called “Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds,” and its Core Human Resource Values and Principles. We also wanted to develop a reference tool that would orient new staff to Cornell and would summarize the benefits Cornell offers and the policies, rights, and responsibilities that apply to Cornell’s nonacademic staff. And through the help of Cornell’s Employee Assembly and the Pawprint board, this handbook captures, as well, the rich variety of educational, social, and networking opportunities available to Cornell’s faculty and staff.

Our aim was to bring together, in a single publication, information about Cornell’s work environment and the many resources and opportunities that can make it an enriching, exciting, and invigorating place to work.

Please let us know if we succeeded, and what we can do to improve this handbook in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Mary George Opperman

Vice President for Human Resources
