Dual Career-Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I guaranteed a job?

There is no guarantee of placement. We will do everything possible to assist you in your job search but can neither create jobs nor intervene in an employer's hiring process.

Will I be given preferential treatment for Cornell positions?

We, at Cornell University, are committed to assisting dual career couples. We can provide, if you wish, both a phone call and a letter to a hiring supervisor to identify you as a dual career candidate for a Cornell position. Also, if a department supervisor is interested in hiring a dual career candidate, that supervisor may request a waiver of the requirement for an external posting. However we cannot interfere in normal hiring procedures.

Can you help me find employment outside Cornell University?

We have a network of business contacts in the community. Through us you can obtain resource information about the local business community, job openings and introductions to contacts of interest for informational interviewing purposes.

Can you help me find an academic position at Cornell?

Those interested in an academic position at Cornell can meet with the Dual Career Program consultant to clarify their employment goals and to obtain any other information of interest. A client's curricula vitae will then be forwarded to the Vice Provost for further attention.

How long will you assist me in my job search?

Program services can continue for up to one year or until you secure your first job, whichever comes first.

Can you help me find an academic position at a nearby college or university?

Cornell University initiated and is a lead member of the Upstate New York Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (UNY HERC). The UNY HERC web site www.unyherc.org can help you identify nearby colleges and universities and their available jobs. The site also provides other information of interest to families relocating to the area.

I'm an independent consultant. Is there any help for me?

The Independent Consultants Network (ICON), a non-profit multidisciplinary networking association, may be helpful to you. Through ICON, you may be connected with potential clients and with other professional consultants working in a range of specialties for both for-profit and non-profit businesses. For more information, see www.ICONconnect.org.
