Special Employment Circumstances

Subject: Employment
Number: 6.6.12
Issued: 3/1/82
Revised: 1/3/03

Employment of Minors
No person under the age of 16 will be hired in regular positions at the university. Cornell University allows the employment of minors in temporary or casual positions provided that the employment is in compliance with the New York State Child Labor Laws. Hiring of all persons under age 18 is contingent upon providing a written job description that demonstrates compliance with legal limitations on the employment of minors (including the number of hours of work per week), and valid working papers to the local hr representative or designee for review and approval before employment begins.

Employment Beyond the age of 70
Nonacademic employees may work beyond age 70; however, it is essential that employees notify Benefit Services in the Office of Human Resources (255-3936) when they have reached their 70th birthday to be properly counseled regarding their continued employment and its impact on their pensions and other benefits.

Employment of Foreign Visitors
Valid visa status is required, without exception, before foreign visitors can be employed at Cornell University. On or before the first day of employment, the successful applicant must produce proof of identity and employment eligibility in accordance with Federal regulations (See Policy 6.6.1, Filling Vacancies).

Employment of Persons Convicted of Criminal Offenses
Consistent with the New York State Human Rights Law, Cornell University will not deny an application for employment from persons previously convicted of one or more criminal offenses unless it is determined that:

  • there is a direct relationship between any of the previous criminal offenses and the employment sought,
  • the granting of employment would involve an unreasonable risk to property or to the safety or welfare of specific individuals or the general public.

Refer to "Considering an Applicant with Criminal Convictions" and contact your local Human Resource Officer or the Recruitment and Employment Center for more information.

International Assignments
Cornell is a university with substantial international connections and interests. Recognizing that a significant number of staff conduct teaching, research, or business abroad, the Travel Office maintains an updated file of travel advisories. This information is also available on CUINFO. In addition, the Office of Sponsored Programs periodically publishes guidelines for conducting sponsored research overseas and the director of University Health Services addresses issues of international health. Cornell University does not compel or even encourage staff to undertake teaching, research or business in foreign locations which pose extraordinary danger to their health or safety.

Nepotism
In order to reduce potential conflict of interest, applicants will not  be considered for employment in a position in which they would be subject to supervision by a relative.
