Purpose
The primary functions of Welcome to Cornell are:
- to counsel and enroll new employees in the university's benefits programs, and
- to reduce departmental paperwork.
Applicability
All newly appointed, regular, nonacademic employees and temporary employees
who are benefits eligible (i.e. have continued appointments of at least
6 months with no break in service) should participate in Welcome to Cornell.
Procedure
As soon as the starting date for the newly hired statutory/endowed employee
has been set, the department should make an appointment with Benefit Services
in the Office of Human Resources. A
WTC registration form must be received by Benefits Services at least one
week before the scheduled WTC appointment. The following materials must
be received by Records Administration in the Office of Human Resources
at least two working days before the employee's job appointment:
- Completed University Personnel Action Form
- I-9 Form
- Employment Application.
The following will be discussed with the new employee at Welcome to Cornell:
- Vacation and leave policies.
- Sick and personal leave policies.
- Disability leave policies.
- All insurances, including: group life, group health plan, Long Term Disability, Select Benefits, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), and the cost of these plans to the employee.
- Retirement program policies.
- Employee ID card.
When possible, departments are encouraged to have employees attend a WTC before the actual job appointment begins. WTC provides authorization for new employees to obtain a Cornell identification card in the Benefit Services in the Office of Human Resources, which can be used to obtain a parking permit from Transportation Services .
A Net ID from Cornell Information Technologies is automatically assigned to each new employee.
