Unemployment Insurance

Purpose
The purpose of Cornell's unemployment insurance program is to provide
eligible claimants with benefits to which they are entitled in a
timely manner, while at the same time controlling these costs by
contesting ineligible claims.
Eligibility
When a staff member's work relationship with Cornell University
is terminated, he/she may be entitled to receive Unemployment Insurance
if he/she:
- Is unemployed through no fault of his/her own;
- is available for and capable of employment, and
- meets all other eligibility requirements defined by the New York State Unemployment Insurance Division. See http://www.labor.state.ny.us/ for more information.
Note: The staff member's eligibility and entitlement to receive unemployment benefits will be determined by the New York State Department of Labor, Unemployment Insurance Division.
Procedure
To determine a person's entitlement for benefits, the New York State Unemployment
Insurance Division
requires the University to provide certain specific information on a former
staff member, including a
statement of all the factors surrounding the staff member's termination.
The Office of Human Resources
is responsible for providing this information within 10 calendar days
of the mailing date of a
communication from the Unemployment Insurance Division. Written communications
from
the Division to departments regarding unemployment insurance should be
hand carried to the local human resource representative or designee.
