School Closing Electronic Mailing List

Would you like to know the latest in midday school closings?

Thanks to the work of the Office of Workforce Diversity, Equity, and Life Quality and WVBR -- and to many area school districts officials for agreeing to participate -- Cornell offers interested parents who are Cornell University faculty, staff and students the opportunity to subscribe to an electronic mail list of school closings, SCHOOL-CLOSING-L.

This list announces unexpected mid-day school closings, and will be especially useful when the weather turns for the worst in the middle of the day. Departmental and unit business managers may also want to subscribe to this list, so that communication within departments and units, especially in those departments where computer access is limited, is ensured. Note that school closings that take place before the school day begins are not announced on this list.

To subscribe to SCHOOL-CLOSING-L: Send e-mail to: school-closing-l-request@cornell.edu with a blank subject line and he text of the message should read: JOIN

How this works:
First you subscribe via E-mail to this list. Then, if there is a school closing, you will get an E-mail message with the name of that school in the subject line. If your children are not in that school, please disregard the message. Please do not call the schools.

Participating schools are:
Candor Central School District
Cincinnatus Central School
Cortland City School District
Dryden Central School District
Elmira/Horseheads School
Groton Central School District
Homer School District
Immaculate Conception School
Ithaca City School District
Ithaca Community Childcare Center (IC3)
Lansing Central School District
Marathon Central School
Moravia Central School District
Newark Valley Central School Districtl
Newfield School District
Odessa-Montour School District
South Seneca Central School District
Southern Cayuga Central School District
Spencer-VanEtten School District
Trumansburg School District
Watkins Glen Central School District
Whitney Point School District

Be sure you and your children talk about, devise, and have reviewed emergency procedures (where they go, how they get home, what to do next) if there is an unexpected school closing. For school calendars indicating scheduled closing dates, see Area School Calendars.
